 | | Mr. T. Prescott | Sixth-grade math consists of Math Workshop and Math Skills. Most homework relates to the daily lesson.
Social Studies in the sixth-grade focuses on the ancient civilizations of Egypt, China and Rome (Fall and Winter trimesters) and world geography (Spring trimester). Students create group and individual projects.
Art focuses on observational drawing of objects and the human figure. The culminating project is a wire sculpture.
Reading and writing are taught in a workshop model, with a mini-lesson, work-time, and share. A typical reader's workshop mini-lesson focuses on a reading strategy which is then practiced during guided reading, literacy centers, and independent reading.
The writer's workshop is centered around genre studies such as memoir, informational reports, procedures, and poetry. Students follow the writing process, which includes keeping a writer's notebook for collecting ideas, choosing and expanding on ideas they want to write about, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, and celebrating.
