Johnson Elementary focuses on Family Literacy. There are four parts to
Family Literacy. English Language Learning (ELL) class teaches parents
reading, writing and speaking in English. Parent and Child Time (PACT)
offers learning activities for parents and children to do together.
Parent Education gives valuable information about schools and raising
children in the United States. Early Childhood Education offers
children birth to 5 years their first "school" experience and begins
preparing them for success in elementary school. Families participate
in each of these components every day they come to class. At JAJ we
offer two Family Literacy classes. The morning class meets from
8:30-ll:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The afternoon class
meets from 12:00-2:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Priority for
registration is given to families living in the JAJ attendance area.
Additionally ECFE at John A Johnson offers Parents and Kids Together
Make it/Take it classes in collaboration with the Eastside Family
Center. These classes focus on parents and children spending time and
learning together. The Make it/Take it classes meet Monday evening from
5:30-7:15 and Friday morning from 9:00-11:00.

Community Kindergarten
The Community Kindergarten Program provides early education for 4 and 5
year old children to better prepare them for regular kindergarten in
elementary schools. Community K is the most intensive 4 year old
program in Family Education with children attending school five days a
week, either mornings or afternoons, for a full school year.
Seventeen children are enrolled in each class with a teacher who holds
a Pre-Kindergarten and a Kindergarten license and an Educational
Assistant who is bilingual. Parents are involved in a parent
education program that includes a focus on how to help their children
to be successful in school. Enrollment priority is given to
children who are English Language Learners, children who qualify for
free or reduced lunch, children with learning and developmental needs
and children without preschool experience. School bus
transportation is provided for enrolled children who meet district
guidelines. Children are enrolled through the Student Placement
Center.
